The stakes of Nazar's music are higher than most, having explored the displacement of his family and his father's leading role in the Angolan Civil War on his debut album Guerrilla. Five years later, Nazar's “rough kuduro” sounds transforms through healing into blossoming arrangements on Demilitarize. Bubbling up from the abyss, Nazar conjures an amorphous sound shuddering under the pressure, minimal yet percussively rich and fluctuating as it evolves with the album's disarming message. Nazar sings candidly amid slippery melodies and visceral pulsating stomps, his vocals fluttering in severed choral textures, softly rapping in agile watery beats, floating freely in negative space.
