With credits for artists as far afield as Pink Siifu, Jaimie Branch, and Yaeji, trumpeter Chris Williams and cellist Lester St. Louis share a sense of sonic boundlessness in their work that amplifies tenfold when they combine for their electroacoustic HxH project. This makes them a perfect fit on noted field recordist KMRU’s nascent OFNOT label; their debut album STARK PHENOMENA sweeps from ethereal, sandy and granular electronics to simmering, lashing licks of noise. The centrepiece ‘Pyrex Vision’ situates a candid conversation on sensory deprivation amidst solemn organ chords, leading to vivid realisation as an aching voice calls and the clarity of bowed cello blows the track’s lid wide open.
