Bleep

Istanbul-born and Berlin-based producer Hüma Utku returns to the Editions Mego for her third LP entitled Dracones. While the title is pulled from a medieval latin phrase about dragons, Utku explores the hyperreal here rather than fantasy. Themes of personal change and the reckoning with one’s past upon returning home creep up throughout its runtime, bits of familial strife and other wounds swirling around her arsenal of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. There are some callbacks to the darker ages though, as hints of lyre and other medieval string instruments peek through the digital detritus to ground these dense but beautiful recordings in something slightly more human.
