London-based experimentalist Luke Younger AKA Helm digs back into the archives for a heady release of breathless, loop-driven ambience for Ducktails’ imprint New Images. In contrast to previous work on PAN or his noise outfit Birds Of Delay (with Heatsick) which operate from the darker end of the spectrum, ‘Impasse’ shows us a different side to this often adventurous producer’s personality. Opening title track ‘Impasse’ transports through a merry-go-round of twinkling samples and hiss whereas ‘Fields’ takes us deeper into the rabbit hole with an all-engulfing onslaught of radiating ambience. On the other side, ‘Imperium’ manages to build a meditative kind of new-age ambience through harsh repeating samples with ‘Glazing Over An Autumn Pastoral’ closes in a blanket of shimmering beauty.
