While memotone’s latest record is a Pruning of unreleased material, it’s an incredibly cohesive selection of tracks dug up from the vault, its enigmatic sounds connecting an anachronistic tracklist with unwavering flow. Percussion and synthesis exist in a nascent slurry of woozy, reedy ambience, slowly finding form with the clicks and chirrups of digital fauna, ritualistic bells and chimes, and vigorously galloping hand drums. The gauzy, lovesick guitars of ‘Not What I Thought’ bring a shift as dreampop turns fourth world with unravelling strings, introducing gleefully detuned synthpop adventures and easy listening music twisted with idiosyncratic timbres and glitchy harmonics.
