Nuremberg downtempo duo Boozoo Bajou having been releasing on Stereo Deluxe since 1998, but for this latest LP of intricate electronica have jumped to R&S imprint Apollo. This is a spooky, bass-led collection of electronic sketches: chilled bongo loops and echoing church bells on ‘Your Weak Fire’; New Age panpipes and plucked strings on ‘Der Kran’; static-soaked jazz drum signatures against Basic Channel synths on the piano-sprinkled ‘Phonetrik’. To anyone who remembers the mysterious Swod project on City Centre Offices, ‘4’ is a similar sound, but with its German creators taking cues from places beyond their own country. An intriguing album, and one that’ll have you checking whether the sounds you can hear are from your speakers or behind the skirting board.
