Mythologising the concrete brutalist streets and folk tales of Northern England, Rainy Miller gives some of his most personal and deeply affecting performances to date on his second album Joseph, What Have You Done?. As Miller constructs a Northern Gothic through emphatic spoken word, soul baring with its intensely tangible imagery, he reveals a haunting that stalks throughout the album’s blurring of textural ambient plunges with emo tinged guitars and contorted, industrial and deconstructed beats. Miller’s longing falsetto is grappled and tossed into dangerously sharp drum chops on ‘The Fable / The Release.’, a contrast the album eagerly explores: at times it’s tender and emotionally weighted, at others it stampedes like a howling bullet through iridescent distortion.
