Genres

Frequently described as Africa’s greatest and most underrated ensemble orchestra, Super Djata’s small run of releases became high currency on the record collector circuit. Now thanks to Funkaholic’s club night label Kindred Spirits their 1983 LP Bambara-inspired ‘Volume 2’ can be picked up without having to fly to an Ivory Coast junk shop. Still as fresh and freaky as it sounded thirty years ago, tracks like ‘Yamba’ take southern Mali melodies and set them to fast-paced jazz drumming, while ‘Maliden’ explores a jangly guitar line and the kind of vocal harmonies Paul Simon would kill for. One for the crate-diggers, or anyone who wants to hear something far flung but guaranteed to make them smile.
