Scott Gordon of Loops Haunt and Oto Hiax (with Mark Clifford of Seefeel) marks a truly inventive debut on Diagonal Records. In 2018 he first experimented with his custom Spinning Plate Instrument, involving struck metal plates rotating on a vertical axis, in a series of scientific demonstrations. Now on Metals, he shows the instrument's true range and potential as its oscillating, circular sound is melodious and washed in filters. ‘And Away’ murmurs with gentle, resonant silver, enrapturing and enigmatic waves of dangling melody in a variety of voicings from smoothly sonorous to brittly rusted. ‘Tilts’ goes further, gurgling, growling, and reconfiguring as the plates spit out electricity, and sizzle with wonky rhythms.
