As a favourite in classical, electroacoustic, and club worlds, Oliver Coates has decided there is no better way to sonify the theatrics of Tudor and Stuart-era period drama Mary & George than by combining all three worlds into one. His soundtrack spans a rich palette, with militant yet slow timpani drumming on ‘Timp X’ alongside agile lute, and lamenting violins sweeping from side to side, later manipulated into steel wool scrubs in engulfing ambience. Turning the Jacobean era on its head, ‘Pulp’ is a kind of trip-baroque piece with harpsichord fluttering alongside synths, while ‘France’ dissolves a murky Burial-esque two step clunk into an angelic shroud.
