DJ Jalen showcases his command over the MPC with his first album for Teklife. The label has a long history with footwork, and DJ Jalen spreads out its characteristics across a variety of tracks, jumping from the dark throbbing bass of ‘Hour Glass’ with its atmospheric string plucks and stabbing drum machine rhythms, to the furious techno and molten acid of ‘Retro’, contrasted with deep house leaning rhodes chords of urgently ticking beats. Amidst woozy and glitzy synths, and dense hazes of sci fi stabs, the album ekes out tension as it builds its layers, transforming into a cinematic, multifaceted take on juke.
