Not Not Fun, purveyors of scorched earth doom and dub, let fly the first official release from UK noise-mongers Blackhoods. Since you can practically see the duo slumped over guitars and gear while listening, it’s appropriate that SUNK is sequenced like a live show. It starts with stark drones on the squeamish ‘Sunk/Bone’, snaps to life with the riffy, clappy but still sludgy ‘Doomhound’, eases into a wintry piece on ‘Dead Calm’, then wraps with a submerged blues (‘Constant Wrestle’) and a stuttering drum-machine workout (‘Adriana’) that really get the crowd going. All in all, SUNK is pretty decent for a first gig.
