Karelian duo Love Cult follow their impressive Public Information debut with an EP for Night School. While their brand of frozen-over techno sludge still defies category, on KNOW EP they’ve further distilled the elements and added new notes. Crunchy black metal riffs return for opener ‘Mise En Abyme’, but the rest of the EP is more daring. Encroaching drones add urgency to the sinister swing and bass wobble of ‘My Boy’, easily the most danceable tune we’ve heard from them. The woozy ‘It’s True’ is equal parts screw and dubstep, and ‘Lust Undone’ alternately sounds like off-kilter footwork and a studio recreation of a firefight. Love Cult remain hard to grasp and all the better for it.
