Glasgow label Numbers have come up with something very special for their latest release: a reissue of the first record ever released on Stuffrecords back in 2002 by Sparky which comes backed with two new tracks by the producer and a 30 minute Ricardo Villalobos remix which, on vinyl, can be played at both 33 RPM and 45 RPM. Sparky is Dave Clark, a member of Glasgow techno band State Of Flux back in the '90s and has since released under the name Truffle Club and collaborated with Optimo's JD Twitch under the Optimo (Espacio) name. His most recent new work has come under the name LUMA for Optimo Trax.

'Portland' was originally recorded back in 1998, live to tape, and given a hasty release on Numbers precursor Stuffrecords. Despite low-level distribution it gained something of reputation in clubs and was given a re-release by Numbers in 2002. One fan of the track was, perhaps surprisingly given the maximal, glistening peaks of the Detroit-inspired original, Ricardo Villalobos. Now in 2013 Numbers have finally got him to provide a very special remix. He's taken the gleaming space-age sheen of the original and converted it - in one take we're told - into an inventive, twitching electro beast, Villalobos' trademark minimalism given a playful spin. All in all, this is a brilliant release, a fitting celebration of what makes Numbers so great both now and back then.
