Since Burial first came to wider attention back in 2006 with his self-titled debut album for Hyperdub, each release of his has felt like a monumental event. No one can work club music into such bewitching and emotionally resonant forms. That same shadowy but soulful quality permeates his latest Hyperdub release 'Rival Dealer', three tracks, grander in scope than anything he has done previously. The title track jitters with all the barely restrained, nervous energy of a rave, breaks doused in spectral static. 'Hiders' is a pop music of boldly anthemic proportions, bruised and yearning vocals set to a swelling backdrop. 'Come Down To Us' is similarly heart-on-sleeve, a rough ballad that mutates and evolves continuously over its thirteen minute length, big choruses and distant R&B melodies slipping in and out of focus.
