The Madvillainy demo tape could have destroyed the album’s success when it “leaked into cyberspace” in 2002. Instead, it was an instant cult classic shared by fans at gigs, before becoming one of the most important hip hop albums of all time. Originally released in 2008, the Madvillainy Demos finally get a wider release with new tracks added to vinyl. Hearing this album in its preformed protean form, it’s not hard to see why people predicted its lasting legacy: MF DOOM’s stream of consciousness lyrics confound and delight, Madlib’s sampledelic jazzy beats punch hard, and the tape’s lofi nature only adds to the album’s insatiable mystique.
