Producer Jonathan Tonks takes static drone landscapes and works mangled hip-hop beats into them, resulting in a sound that mines the untapped region between bass music cabal Old Apparatus and slinky crooner Jamie Woon - if he was made not to croon. The debut Pssngr EP ‘Breathe’ is a dark but alluring affair, with rasping vocoders, sparkling strings and broken beats on the title track; subterranean, almost deep house-like low-end on ‘Forest’; and warm sitars and jazz bar sounds on ‘Form’. Many new acts claim to have an original sound but we haven’t heard anything like Pssngr this year.
