And following the orchestral grandeur and narrative bounties of his previous albums, a turn to a sparser hip hop sound rooted in electro and synth-funk may come as some surprise indeed. Not for Kendrick though; GNX shows him completely locked in with the flow, at home as an independent artist with his company pgLang after parting with Top Dawg Entertainment, and delivering some of his fieriest, most impassioned performances to date.
