Experimental noise-rap pioneers clipping. are back on Sub Pop with a new LP entitled Dead Channel Sky. Jettisoning some of the headier and proggier elements of their last few full length efforts, clipping. zero in on 80s/90s retrofuturism here, finding a sweet spot somewhere between golden era NYC hip-hop, early Detroit electro, and classic rave with the cut and paste vibe of a mixtape. Wilco guitarist Nels Cline drops in on the positively whacked drum and bass burner ‘Malleus’, but the group kick up plenty of beautiful noise when left to their own devices on tracks like warp speed ‘Dodger’.
