Dub Syndicate are indispensable to the history of On-U Sound, having shaped the label’s voice as one of its longest running acts since their debut album in 1982. With drummer and leader Lincoln Valentine “Style” Scott at the helm, the band’s credits are a microcosm of On-U’s lineup of recurring characters, like Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah of African Head Charge, Shara Nelson, and Lee “Scratch” Perry to name but an illustrious few. Their earlier years were detailed in the Ambience In Dub compilation; Out Here On The Perimeter collects the quartet of solo studio albums where Style Scott began producing alongside mastermind Adrian Sherwood, introducing experimental ideas to a tried and tested dub sound.

1989’s Strike The Balance marks the beginning of Style Scott’s increasingly focussed vision for Dub Syndicate, jumping from psychedelic dub pulses and buzzing, overdriven guitar shreds, to bass and sitar guitar powered downtempo grooves, to a cheeky, romantic, metropolitan dub / synthpop melange with ‘Je T’Aime’. Stoned Immaculate crystallises that vision as one of the band’s golden records: far out and enshrouded in smoke, heavy on the drum machines with fiery riffs, turned molten and sludgy in bonus remixes with liquid bass edits and dub sirens.

Heading into the heart of the 90s, the band grew ever more adventurous with the worldly and extraterrestrial sonics of Echomania. Tracks like ‘No No’ are fused with downtempo rhythms and tabla from Talvin Singh, and conscious hip hop lyricism, while ‘2001 Love’ layers up on percussive leftfield sounds and sequences. They continue to play with style on Ital Breakfast, all tracks echo laden as jazzy saxophones soon meld into classic piano stabs, and morph into post-rock-esque drifting guitar passages on highlight ‘The Jewel’.

Out Here On The Perimeter is a vital record of Dub Syndicate’s legacy, featuring anthemic tracks from their most celebrated albums.
