Where previous albums for Ideologic Organ charted fear inducing noise in drony waters, Golem Mecanique’s third record for the label expresses more fragilely the ideas of destruction and violence, spurred by the overhanging legacy, murder, and last words of Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini. Described by Stephen O’Malley as “nearly ceremonial”, Golem Mecanique’s practice taps into an ancient figure of performance whereby a constant drone accompanies mythic, reverent vocal explorations. Layered chants match the drone box’s dramatic, oceanic texture, encircling each other before waves of reeds swallow the tracks whole.
