Originally released in 2004 on David Sylvian’s Samadhi Sound label, Harold Budd’s ‘Avalon Sutra’ gets a caring re-master on Darla Records to mark its 10 year anniversary. The haunting piano rolls and plain string lines on ‘L’enfant Perdu’ evidence why Budd was such a natural collaborator with ambient legend Brian Eno, while ‘How Vacantly You Stare At Me’ employs a pared-down sax line with a deadly melancholy. The enveloping synth pads of ‘Little Heart’ are offset by strange ticking metals, blending subtly into acoustic strings on ‘Rue Casimir Delavigne’, with the masterful Budd finding luminous subtleties within a restricted palette.
