Following on from I’ve Been Trying To Tell You, Saint Etienne present a loose sequel drenched in woozy 2am vibes with their 12th album. Beginning by retreating into introverted chords, The Night tracks the breathing space of the afterhours, with wispy vocals washed in the ambience of constant rain hitting the windowpanes. Placid pianos and sharp string plucks echo into the street as harpsichord melodies twirl, and the trio embark on tender jazz inflected pop on ‘Gold’ with strutting keys and drifting mellifluous saxophones.
