XL Recordings Richard Russell’s project Everything Is Recorded returns with a new collab-heavy LP entitled Richard Russell Is Temporary. With a call sheet that leaves space for such disparate talents as Jah Wobble, Bill Callahan, Noah Cyrus, and Roses Gabor (among many, many others), Russell nevertheless finds ways to keep things cohesive and groovy throughout. Using folk music gone digital as a jumping off point, tracks like the punchy Sampha, Laura Groves, Jah Wobble, and Yzz Ahmed collab ‘Losing You’ fold funk and soul into the mix to nice effect. Utilising all these talents like a DJ stacks samples is a hallmark of the Everything Is Recorded sound, but never before has the project sounded so smooth and laidback.
