Louis Johnstone, aka Wanda Group, graces Gold Panda’s Notown label with an introspective, ambient refocussing of the fuzzy sound he’s made his own over the past year or so. Both of the record’s lengthy tracks have the feel of an improvised jam, with distant hums and echoes of environmental sound flitting into moments of industrial whirrs, all supplemented with a healthy dose of tape crackle. The A-side’s employment of chopped-and-screwed vocals and sultry piano adds a particularly unique touch to a haunting release.
