Lee Bannon’s debut album for Ninja Tune sees the New Yorker move away from the hip-hop he’d made his name with and experiment with jungle. Referencing his two favourite cultural touchstones - the ‘90s Sacramento jungle scene and Paul Thomas Anderson movies, in particular the frenzied score to There Will Be Blood by Johnny Greenwood - ‘Alternate/Endings’ is a 61-minute artillery attack on your sound system. The likes of ‘Value 10’ fidget and swirl like vintage Photek, while ‘Shoot Out The Stars And Win’ offers chilled, murky beats that you could comfortably play in a cocktail bar. Gremlins actress Phoebe Cates might be surprised to find Bannon’s immortalised her with a namesake ambient jungle track; just one of many surprises on this meticulous but hyperactive album.
