First given a release in 1994, South African Tsonga Disco icon Penny Penny's debut album 'Shaka Bundu' went on to sell 250,000 copies and its star to play stadiums across Africa. He later in life turned to politics, becoming a figure in Nelson Mandela's African National Congress Party. Now Awesome Tapes from Africa are giving the album a very desirable re-release. It's an exceptional record, melding snaking synth-pop and languid house grooves into something that still thrills.
