Perfume Genius's third album Too Bright was an exciting reinvention. A total masterclass in pop songwriting rendering the most personal feelings universally catchy, while still surprising with leftfield turns. Tracks like ‘My Body’ and ‘Grid’ verge on hairraising industrial noise through guitar passages minimally tense yet rocking and rolling, in between intimately bare piano ballads and the epic operatics of ‘Fool’ soaring over glossy glam rock. The steady, grinding pulse of guitars contrasted by jaunty keys and elegant backing vocals would see lead single ‘Queen’ become a hit, powered by unrepentant and uncompromising lyrics.
