Genres

Before 1991’s more mature Spiderland gradually achieved cult classic status as a touch stone of post rock, Slint’s debut album Tweez landed just two years earlier, kickstarting a noisy, mathy, post hardcore ruckus the band would soon refine impeccably. With original bassist Ethan Buckler, Slint evoke a wild jam session on Tweez with in studio banter captured by Albini on the fly ("Steve, these headphones are fucked up!") weaving in between metallic guitars wielding wild pinched harmonics, giving the album a DIY garage aesthetic. Complete with random back ground clatter and bursts of audio destruction deployed almost in a messy musique concrète like overlay further punctuating the songs along with jangly fangs of bass contrasting with Brian McMahan's further psychedelically tinged guitar tones and Britt Walford's unmistakable drums. Meanwhile it must be David Pajo fully embracing his love of metal on the album's centrepiece ‘Charlotte’, invoking near doom-like atmosphere with its long roiling riffs.

35th Anniversary Edition mastering info and track list

  • LP1: Originally recorded by Steve Albini and released in 1989, tweez has been remastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Studio from the original analog master tapes.
  • LP2: Tweethan mix. Per Ethan Buckler (Slint bassist on tweez), “Finally - after thirty-five long years - the other guys in Slint decided to be nice to me and let me have my Tweez remix. I complained incessantly back in the day about how the Albini production style ruined our first recording.” In 2023, Ethan took the original multi-track recordings to a local studio in Louisville. Upon handing the engineer a copy of a pre-tweez Slint practice tape, he said “Make it sound like this.” LP2 of this tweez (35th anniversary edition) is the result. Mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Studio.
