Knitting Factory Records’ reissuing of Fela Kuti’s back catalogue, almost in its entirety, has given a sense of the scope and vision of the Afrobeat legend’s work and its enduring impact. 1985’s ‘Army Arrangement’ sees the Nigerian musician and political activist in typically provocative mode, marrying social message with an irresistible funk and groove. The layers upon layers of core funk elements piled on top of one another give a sonic sense of the military disorder described by Kuti, and make this an unmistakably valuable piece in the output of this singular artist.
