Knitting Factory Records’ reissuing of Fela Kuti’s back catalogue, almost in its entirety, has given a sense of the scope and vision of the Afrobeat legend’s work and its enduring impact. ‘Original Suffer-Head’ was released in 1981 on Barclay Records, ‘I.T.T.(International Thief Theif)’ the year previously on the same imprint, and here they are compiled together. For Kuti fans and those discovering it for the first time, this, like the re-issue collection as a whole, is an insight into the work of a maverick who managed to be both sensual and political in a way few have matched.
