Following previous releases on The Death Of Rave and Planet Mu, Gábor Lázár finds himself on raster with the latest in his mindbending rhythmic experimentations. His clip of albums since his real name debut in 2013 has been a steady one, threading in collaborations with Russell Haswell and Mark Fell along the way. Reflex, Gábor Lázár’s fifth solo LP thus far, is his most intense and hyperactive effort yet, echoing the tracks of two time labelmate Rian Treanor and the ultra-polished micro sounds of raster alumni Alva Noto.

Working with a concise palette of split second technoid beats, shining dancefloor synths, and liquid glitches, the album unspools an infinite array of variations in constantly reorienting, gyrating, vacillating rhythmic forms. Pulled away from the realm of melody, synths are effervescent as they laser and drill into tracks teetering between recognisable techno structures and total abstraction.

‘Event’ recalls the early proto-house tracks completely deconstructed and mashed up in a blender, dazzling timbres flying off of the disco ball mirror shards as they stutter and stab, with a constant stream of claps and clicks rubbing against the slippery thumps and sparkles. This is music made from particle smashing lab experiments, a feeling backed up by the scientific, technologically minded track titles. Metallic resonance colours the synth surges of ‘Pathway’, skewing dub techno glitters that modulate across the upbeat swathes of micro percussion, while ‘Signal’ turns even speedier, growing ever more complex with strobing frequencies.

Gábor Lázár presents a mind-bending work with a footwork tempo on Reflex: rhythms as complex and confounding as they come, yet tempered into awe inspiring productions.
