1974 was a big year for James Brown’s bandleader Fred Wesley. Striking out on his own for the very first time, the funky trombone player from Columbus, Georgia issued two solo LPs that featured the rest of Brown’s band The JBs that stretched the already-taut funk rhythms of Wesley’s main gig into fascinating new shapes. Tracks like the gargantuan ‘I'm Payin’ Taxes, What Am I Buyin’?’ and ‘Sam Beat’ added early vocal sampling and cyclical experimental textures to the backbeat, while ‘Blow Your Head’ went on to to shape the very fabric of early hip-hop as its relentless beat became a favorite Public Enemy. This reissue from Get On Down puts a landmark release back on the racks for the first time in a while.
