This seminal 1978 release ‘Lanquidity’ marks a rare point in the genius’ spiralling discography that represents an approachable entry point. Whilst indisputably freeform, an infusion of funk, soul and disco produce a more familiar listen than the majority of the free jazz pioneers releases. Tinkering piano keys and a meandering sax underpin the ice-cold title track 'Lanquidity' whilst trumpets blown from the soul give 'Where Pathways Meet' an endearing swagger. Studied and sampled by modern artists such as Flying Lotus and Floating Points, Sun Ra maps out an exploration of the cosmos alongside the likes of Marshall Allen, Julian Presley, Danny Thompson and Ego Omoe. More than the sum of its parts this landmark release marks a perfect gateway to the mythical Ra. The music is different here, the vibrations are different, not like planet earth…
