Londoner Kit Grill graces the Get Me! label with his debut LP, following on from the confident ‘Expressions’ EP on his own Primary Colours imprint. ‘Mirror Image’ is a dazzling, yet simple suite of pieces utilising principally a basic synthesiser and programmed kit sounds, which sounds not unlike Rounds-era Four Tet but with less filigree decorations. ‘Autumn’ charms in its naïve arpeggiations and metronome percussion, while ‘Velodrome’ takes these staple elements on a more propulsive and rhythmic path, offering up inevitable Kraftwerk comparisons in the process. The album overall is a compelling exercise in inventively using a small amount of instruments for a wide range of expressive functions, and will undoubtedly win over those with a penchant for the more reflective side of electronic music.
