From the beginning of her very first LP, you can tell American avant-garde composer and experimental sound poet Beth Anderson is deeply interested in the intricacies of how words work. Her performances are playful, full of life, expressively racing alongside rolling drums and rattling percussion. I Can’t Stand It collects works made throughout the 70s, including the titular elusive 7” from 1980, pitting the endless dynamism of New York streets against Anderson’s resolute frustration at the “assertive” city, written in literary punk styling. Elsewhere, she deconstructs language at breakneck pace, displaying the push and pull between mother and daughter on ‘Torero Piece’.
