Arguably the most vocally overpowering of James Brown’s many proteges, Lyn Collins caused quite a stir with her second single ‘Think (About It)’. A singular tour-de-force of swirling funk tamed only by Collins’ smoky, yet bellowing voice, the track proved an excellent centrepiece for her 1972 debut LP of the same name. Whether taking on ballads, societal ills, or rewriting music history, Collins attacks the lush instrumentals from Brown’s People Records stable with rarefied command and impeccable style. This reissue from Get On Down adds a fresh coat of paint of Collins’ opening statement without diluting its power with anything superfluous.
