Meemo Comma’s music has always been highly conceptual, whether referencing 90s dance music and Jewish mysticism, or sonifying the effects of prescription medication. Her fifth album Decimation Of I arrives at the crossroads of the Strugatsky brothers’ 1971 novel Roadside Picnic (which also formed the basis for ‘Stalker’ by Andrei Tarkovsky) and global climate disasters, building upon her conceptual discography to create an eerie soundtrack of alien-human hybrid soundscapes. Abstract chamber jazz arrangements of woodwinds and contorted arpeggio plucks meet acidically charged synthwave and steely electronics, a contrast between organic and synthetic that coalesces on ‘As It Is Written’ with angelic vocals floating through morphing, buzzing ambient sequences.
