Having always sat within the rich community of London’s underground scene, Tirzah has likened her music project to more of a team than a solo career, her name acting as a revolving door through which a familiar cast of the UK’s most talented walk in and out of. Since 2013, she has collaborated with her partner in crime Mica Levi and partner in life Kwake Bass, Coby Sey, Kwes., Dean Blunt, and many many more, appearing in the CURL collective and dropping elusively captivating EPs. Still, it would be her debut album in 2018 that would enshrine Tirzah’s songs in the lexicon of modern pop and R&B.

Devotion may very well have been one of the most highly anticipated debuts in the London scene this century, and has arguably settled into modern classic status by now. With most songs containing little more than a trio of beats, keys, and vocals, Tirzah and co. make the most from a minimal palette. These are lovesongs first and foremost, laced with romance and lust, melancholy and desire, but written with uncompromising yet universally appealing character. Tirzah’s delivery is casual, stately, though she lets of a powerful melisma when the time is right, singing over the blurry-edged beats of grime and R&B, downtempo and quasi-garage pop hits, and the occasional guitar shred over the cyclical pianos on the title track.

Colourgrade came in 2021 after some downtime with her family, which comes through as Tirzah’s crew of close mates and loved ones are a constant throughout the video for ‘Hive Mind’ just as they are throughout her career. After the cohesion of Devotion, Tirzah takes more risks here, travelling further out to sonic edges she had been secretly inhabiting all along: the kinetic zaps of ‘Hips’, the wavy meander of guitar and swirling incomprehensible vocals on ‘Crepuscular Rays’. These edges get further teased out on Highgrade, not just a remix album but a proper ode to the music community that Tirzah flourishes in. Speakers Corner Quartet fold in plucked bass, lilting strings, and smooth flutes, Arca renders Colourgrade’s kaleidoscopic tendencies even more ethereal and formless, Still House Plants create a labyrinth of grizzled guitars, crashes, and mesmerising vocal runs.

Whether it’s her voice floating through the songs of her South London kin or her artistry bringing the collective together for her own records, Tirzah’s music often feels like the fulcrum around which London moves.
