A particularly intimate look at Ryuichi Sakamoto’s soundtrack work, Coda is a solo piano suite reinterpreting music from the cult classic film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. Having never been released outside of Japan for over forty years, Coda finally makes it way to our ears as a stunning deconstruction of Sakamoto’s earlier compositions, swapping curious string plucks for full, flowing angular block chords on tracks like ‘Germination’, while chords punches wondrously and dynamically in the latter half of the main theme. It’s also a showcase of his virtuosic performances as a pianist, leaping between keys with ease.
