The Lapsus label dusts off an oft-overlooked classic of the post-punk movement with this 30th anniversary reissue of Bedouin Ascent’s Science, Art And Ritual LP. Combining the free jazz, noise, and dub flavoured exploration of London’s then burgeoning experimental punk scene with the native Indian classical he grew up around via his parents, the sound of Science, Art And Ritual still feels wonderfully out of time and space today. From a simple base of electric guitars and rudimentary drum machines Bedouin added overdubs of congas, pie instruments, and other folk adjacent tools to bridge the gap between his past and present. In hindsight, what’s most striking of all is how close it comes to the sound of the techno soon to come bursting from some thousands of miles away in Detroit and Chicago in the years to follow.
