We don’t say this lightly but thank God for gap years: without one, Brian Shimkovitz would never have fallen in love with the West African cassette scene he’s been blogging/running a label about since. His latest is a remaster of a 1985 single from Ethiopian one-man-band Hailu Mergia, whose traditional songs on analogue synths play with hooting Casios (‘Wegene’) and ominous bass (‘Prins Thomas Diskomiks’), and have been gloriously remastered here.
