Andy Stott gives trip-hop legend Tricky’s ‘Valentine’ a dread-inducing remix on this new release. Tricky’s breathy drawl dominates proceedings propped up with the walls of dubbed out Basic-Channel-esque low frequencies and hiss which made early Stott recordings like ‘Passed Me By’ so memorable. Skewing Francesca Belmonte’s vocals into ghostly shapes in a manner reminiscent of LP ‘Luxury Problems’, the addition of footwork-esque ticking hi-hats from Stott takes the production into a space inhabited by labels like New York’s Tri Angle Records. Drawing the link between ‘90s Bristol trip-hop and more contemporary ethereal slow burners in a truly singular fashion, the Manchester producer has produced something very memorable indeed.
