The latest from archaeomusicologist Lukas De Clerck is a simultaneous merging and separation of past and present. Returning to his practice with the aulos, De Clerck invents modern, custom made approaches to the ancient Greco-Roman instrument, whose sound combines the sharp buzz of reeds and horns, the spectral atmospherics of pipe organs, the whoosh of flutes, perhaps even the dexterity of a synthesiser as “the reeds behave like oscillators”, but with a guttural, earthshattering, encircling bellow completely of its own. It zips like bees and squawking birds and stutters like steam and sirens. The Telescopic Aulos of Atlas is like a musical chainsaw, viscerally intoxicating.
