Berlin's Modeselektor and Apparat return as Moderat with their second full length 'II'. The follow up to their incredible debut in 2009, Moderat have refined their sound and continue to make music like no other, producing an album that is effortlessly warm and boldly genre traversing. Crunchy bass and big-room soul on 'Bad Kingdom' bleeds into feather-light beats on 'Versions', before the stumbling 'Let In The Light', a moment of barely-there pop of the most delicate kind. Even when they are at their most dance-floor focused, as on the ten minute 'Milk', there is warmth between the 4/4 patter. 'Gita' meanwhile sees vocals and trickling pads pulled into strange synthetic shapes and 'Clouded (Interlude)', though brief, is a moment of touching ambience. It's an album of peaks and bittersweetness, a consistently surprising and subtle release.
