Theo Parrish christens his Wildheart Recordings imprint with this absolute killer team-up with Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen. The Nigerian drummer, known for his tenure as musical director for Fela Kuti and more recently a spate of musically adventurous collaborations, joins Parrish for a pair of spirited tracks, along with Eska, Andrew Ashong and Dave Okumu of the Invisible. ‘Day Like This’ is built around one of Allen’s trademark rolling grooves and a thick bass line, and features silky accompaniment from Parrish on keys and a jazzy, improvised vocal from Eska. On soulful flip ‘Feel Loved’, Allen locks into a house beat that pulses under emotive synths and a lovely dual male/female vocal. The song’s second half breakdown, all spacey keys, wailing guitar licks and dextrous drum fills, is sure to please.
