Our second August record comes from a new Chicago jazz quartet called Frequency. Led by 8 Bold Souls founder Ed Wilkerson on tenor sax, the group also includes AACM co-president Nicole Mitchell on flute, Hamid Drake's main rhythm section partner Harrison Bankhead on bass, and Chicago underground mainstay Avreeayl Ra on percussion. The foursome have created a vibrant suite of improvisations here that show that the Chicago jazz underground, a boon of influence for decades upon decades, hasn't slowed down a bit.
