British songwriter Nick Drake's music failed to find commercial acclaim during the artist's tragically short life time, but his brand of gossamer-fine pop has since proved highly influential, encapsulating an isolated, doomed and very British romanticism with great poeticism. His second album Bryter Later is arguably his most musically expansive record, featuring contributions from folk rockers Fairport Convention and John Cale of The Velvet Underground. His arresting voice, which seems to barely rise above a whisper, is accompanied by exquisitely wrought musical arrangements - the gentle sweeps of strings, pattering keys and stirring chords - making for a true gem of an album.
