William Basinki’s first solo recording release in four years arrives in the form of ‘Nocturnes’, comprised of two extended pieces of material – ‘Nocturnes’ written between 1979-80 and ‘The Trail of Tears’ recorded in 2009 for Robert Wilson’s opera, ‘The Life and Death of Marina Abramovich’. With particular despondency and melancholy, the compositions are nonetheless self-assured and strikingly mellow. A treated piano unfurls distant keys amidst shimmering detail and submerged gauze.
