Repress!

Kyle Hall's work has always been about the grit. Right from the word go - his first release was for Omar S.'s label FXHE Records - through to the brilliant stream of releases on his own Wild Oats label over the last few years, his beats have shook with a rough and unhinged magnetism.

That unrestrained streak is present and thrillingly correct on his debut album. 'The Boat Party' fizzles with tape hiss and crunchy beats. He's never clattered so competently as on a track like "Spoof" where roughly-hewn beats crackle and run wild. "Dr. Crunch" grinds and shakes with dusty weight. The swirly, cymbal driven pop of "Crushed" makes for a deep and rich turn, its meandering lullaby vocals peculiarly catchy. Though even this more introspective turn is bathed in raw, electrical static, imbued with that D.I.Y kick that makes his music so special.

'The Boat Party' confirms just how good Kyle Hall is. He's the kind of idiosyncratic talent that doesn't come along very often. All rough edges, producing very much to the beat of his own drum.
